History

The New Mexico Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League had its start in 1947 with less than 15 Japanese American families in Albuquerque and Gallup participating. They called themselves the Albuquerque Nisei (second generation) Club at the time, with a focus on social activities.

Activities

The Chapter has a Taiko group, a Japanese dance group, an Okinawa dance group, a bowling league, and an arts & crafts group.  Some Chapter members offer lessons in Ikebana, martial arts, tea ceremony, origami, Japanese language, shigin, and other arts. This New Mexico Chapter is also a “community-oriented” group and have members who represent the Japanese community as a whole on various boards or organizations within the community, such as the Asian American Association of New Mexico, the Albuquerque Arts Alliance/Heritage Council, the FBI Community Council, and the Federal Asian Pacific American Council. The Chapter hosts a picnic each year during the summer, and will soon begin to offer classes in the various “arts” throughout the year to members and the general public as fundraising events, such as maki sushi-rolling class with a small lunch served on the side, followed by have bonsai tree demonstrations, ikebana demonstrations, an Anime event for youngsters, Japanese cooking class, etc.
